On occasion I wake up with pimples on my face, typically around ‘that time of the month’ which I found out is called cyclical acne. It always seems to happen on the day of a big event that I am supposed to look good for. I wake up, I’m feeling confident then BAM there it is staring right back at me in the mirror. I am sure we have all been there where we try popping pimples in hopes that they will go away before the evening, or covering them with makeup – which ironically only seems to make them more noticeable.

Living in a dorm full of girls who were constantly looking at themselves in the mirror, made me realize what a big issue this could be for some people. Some girls wouldn’t leave their rooms if a zit happened to show up unexpectedly.

Now, nobody wants to be a hermit just because of a few blemishes. So I was on a mission to find acne causes and the most effective ways to treat acne without breaking your budget, or by using the typical chemically filled acne products.

The first thing I wanted to find out was how many different types of acne there were. I knew about cyclical acne – which is when you get it during your menstrual cycle – but what about the other acne types and what causes them?

Acne Types

Blackheads whiteheads comedones, what’s the difference?

  • Comedones are congested pores. This is the beginning of any case of acne, sometimes they are not noticeable until they turn into something larger like blackheads or whiteheads.

  • Whiteheads are pores that have been clogged due to the sebum (oil) mixing with dead skin cells around a hair follicle. They are white because a tiny bit of skin covers the clogged area creating a puss filled pore.

  • Blackheads are similar to whiteheads, they have the same cause (pores that are clogged due to oil mixing with dead skin cells around a hair follicle), however they do not have skin covering them, which allows them to become oxidized (air gets in) and causes the color to change to black.

  • Papules are hard raised lesions ( red bumps) on the body. It happens when there is a lot of pressure on the pore; the pressure thins out the walls of the pore and eventually ruptures it leaving raised nodules underneath the skin.

  • Pustules or Cystic Acne , this is the most severe form of acne, where hard bumps and cysts form in the skin. This type of acne happens when the follicle (pore) is enlarged and then clogged, on top of having dead skin cells and oil, white blood cells get into the mixture causing your skin to form small cysts underneath.

    Acne Causes

There are a few reasons that people get acne, the first one being Hormones. Hormone changes are what affect most people when it comes to this irritating skin condition, and that is because it causes the sebaceous (oil) glands to produce more oil.

When your glands produce more oil, it mixes with the dead skin cells on your face or body. Instead of sloughing off like it should, this oil gets trapped around the hair follicles and clogs your pores.

This is what causes the skin to redden and swell up; your body thinks it has to fight off an infection so it rushes its white blood cells to attack the invader, even though there’s no infection. So with the mix of the white blood cells, the oil and dead skin, this is what ultimately causes the swelling and puss (yuck!)

    _________________________________________________________________

Bacteria lives on your skin, usually it does not cause any problems, but sometimes it can be one of the acne causes. Those bacteria will interact with the oils in your skin and cause irritation. If this irritation swells the skin, then the white blood cells attack what it assumes is an infection, causing the puss to form.

    Top________________________________________________________________

Another culprit is a poor diet. I know, there are a ton of websites that say diet is a myth, but this is completely untrue. While greasy foods and chocolate might not be what leads to acne, overall what you eat does play a big role. How? Well, if you eat a lot of processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, etc. these all contain a lot of nasty chemicals, preservatives, and pesticides. Your body is then forced to work at an alarming rate to get rid of all of these extra toxins that are not supposed to be in your system. Since the skin is the biggest toxin expeller, if it can’t keep up with the rate at which toxins are being expelled, your pores get clogged and acne forms. It makes sense, don’t you think?

    Top_________________________________________________________________

Insulin Resistance can also cause acne. When your body is unable to process insulin properly it creates a larger number of male hormones (even in females) these hormones create more oil production, which clogs your pores.
