Brushing Teeth the Natural Way

Natural Toothpaste Recipes

Brushing teeth with natural products can help prevent and treat tooth decay - giving you healthy teeth - while keeping unnecessary chemicals out of your body.

Regular brushing and flossing, combined with a healthy diet, go a long way towards healthy teeth.

Making your own natural tooth paste adds extra benefits (or takes away the negative ones) such as no nasty chemicals.

Toothpaste Ingredients

A COUPLE OF NASTY CHEMICALS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN COMMERCIALLY MADE TOOTHPASTE

Not all commercially prepared tooth pastes will contain these ingredients, but some will so it is important to know what to look for - and hopefully avoid.

  • Triclosan - this is used to kill microbes in the toothpaste, prolonging its commercial shelf life. There are both medical and environmental concerns about the use of triclosan. In some countries it is no longer widely used in personal cosmetics, but it is still worth checking on your label. It has been linked to thyroid disruption, drug resistant bacteria, and dioxins in the environment. Not very encouraging info if you are putting it in your mouth!

  • Sodium lauryl phosphate or SLS - even though SLS can irritate the mucous membranes in the mouth (it can penetrate through the surface layer quite deeply) it is still often included in commercially made toothpastes! It is particularly irritating to people who suffer from recurring mouth ulcers.

    Cinnamon Tooth Paste Recipe

On my teeth whitening page I have already talked about the benefits of Baking Soda.

Here is a recipe that expands on those benefits with some flavor as well as the health benefits of Cinnamon.

Preventing rotten teeth can also taste pretty good!

    WHAT YOU NEED:

  • 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • Suitable size container with air-tight lid

    WHAT TO DO:

  • Mix all the ingredients together in the container until well mixed.

  • This tooth paste will keep for a few days if the container is nice and clean before you start.

  • You may wish to experiment with ingredient quantities to get the consistency and flavor that works best for you.

  • Brush your teeth!

    Thinking About The Environment

    A NOTE ON TOOTHBRUSHES

If you are interested in using eco-friendly products, then you are already well on the way with homemade natural toothpaste, and all natural skincare products.

    BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR TOOTHBRUSH?

  • Think about all the toothbrushes you use in a year. A tooth brush in good condition is essential for the health and care of your teeth.

  • If they are made of plastic, what do you think happens to them when you are finished and they go out in the rubbish?

  • Could you buy a more eco-friendly toothbrush made of natural materials that comes with less packaging?
