Dark Circles Under Eyes

At different times in our lives we probably all suffer from dark circles under eyes.

So a really commonly asked question is:

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THEM?

Sometimes it is simply from a lack of sleep. The obvious answer may be “get more sleep”, but that is not always the remedy we are looking for. This is particularly true if there is more than one cause.

Some Causes

  • Pregnancy - being pregnant naturally takes a toll on your body as it works hard at supporting your baby. For most women this means being extra tired for long periods of time, which can result in you looking visibly tired under the eyes.
  • Diet - a poor diet or a diet that is lacking in necessary vitamins and minerals can directly result in visible tiredness and/or a general tiredness that can have the same effect.
  • Genetic factors - the natural colour of your skin coupled with a tendency for the skin to darken under your eyes can be factors that are difficult to avoid. Minimising the effect should still be possible though.
  • Lack of Sleep - not getting enough sleep combined with one or more of the above factors can greatly amplify the look of dark circles under your eyes.
Often it is first thing in the morning when they look their worst! Not a great start to the day!
If you have slept badly, especially if it is due to too much sugar or caffeine the day before, it is surprising (actually horrifying) how obvious your dark circles can be.

    Some Treatments

What type of treatment you choose will depend on what works best for you at the time.

Sometimes when our dark circles are most noticeable it is not the time of day that we are able to stop for 15 minutes to treat them.

Mornings in particular are often rushed, so it might work best to choose a quick treatment for the morning, and then plan another approach for evenings and weekends.

It is also important to address the underlying causes that you have control over, such as diet and lack of sleep.

    WHAT TO DO:

    QUICK FIXES
Great for the morning rush when you want to quickly soothe puffy eyes and lessen the darkening underneath.

  • Use an ice cube wrapped in a cloth under your eyes for 10 minutes. If you have time, crush the ice. I find this is a lot more gentle, and gives a better "fit" under your eye.

  • Freeze a few tea bags that have caffeine in them, then place them on your eyes for 10-15 minutes. Remember that they need to be "used" before they go into the freezer. These are great if you plan ahead as they are ready to go when you need them.

    SOOTHING, RELAXING TREATMENTS
When you have a bit more time it is worth making the effort to sit back, relax and give your eyes the treatment they need.

  • Crush peppermint leaves, and leave under your eyes for 15 minutes.

  • Mix some lemon juice and tomato juice together, and dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply under your eyes for 5 minutes.
Careful! Don’t get it in your eyes!

    And there you have it!
Ways to look better, feel better and hide those visible signs of tiredness.
