Natural Ways to Exfoliate Your Skin

A lot of people ask how to exfoliate your skin.

There are so many methods. This is one of my favorite parts of doing things naturally, because you get to use a lot of items that you already have in your kitchen.

Most of the recipes below are simple, containing only a few ingredients, and anyone can do them.  They are also really cost effective and have little or no packaging so they are good for the environment.

Why Is Exfoliating So Important?

  • IT HELPS REMOVE DEAD SKIN CELLS
While this might seem like a Captain Obvious answer, getting rid of dead skin cells is important and beneficial for your skin's health.

Dead skin cells are able to take the moisture right from your healthy skin causing it to dry out, become brittle, and age faster.

Not only that, but in acne cases, dead skin gets trapped in the oils that the sebaceous glands produce, making your breakouts worse than they have to be.
  • IT HELPS EVEN SKIN TONE AND REDUCE AGE SPOTS
If you get rid of that dead layer of skin, the melanin has less of a chance to cluster and form, meaning your skin tone will be more even and age spots will be less apparent.
  • AND IT REALLY DOES FEEL SO GOOD - BOTH AT THE TIME AND AFTER!
Even if you are on the tightest budget, or stuck miles from the nearest store - you will probably be able to find a little spare sugar and oil in your supplies to nourish and treat your body and soul!

Let's Start In The Kitchen!

Even simpler are some of the core ingredients I use to exfoliate. You will find them in your kitchen... lemons, sugar, salt, olive oil, baking soda, oats.
You could even exfoliate while camping just by using what you already have with you!

Exfoliating and moisturizing is just so easy and effective with any combination of these mixed into the right consistency with a little oil.

What Should I Choose?

BAKING SODA
Most brands of baking soda are the same in terms of quality, but you can save a bit of money by buying a bigger packet. This size gives you a good price without having to store a really, really giant load of product.

LEMONS
I don't know about you but I never buy lemons! There is always someone in the neighbourhood with a tree full of fresh lemons. We even have a whole street of lemon trees in our town that you can help yourself to!
They are great for skin exfoliation (and cooking).

SUGAR If you don't have a fine sugar such as caster or brown sugar then simply get out your food processor, or mortar and pestle. Grind up your ingredients to the consistency you want for your skin.

OATS
The same method can be applied to oats or almonds - grind them until lovely and fine - especially if you are going to use them on your face and neck.

After a couple of attempts you will quickly work out what you do and don't like.

Body scrubs can be a little less fine and your skin will still be okay, but you may find it surprising how rough the ingredients feel on the skin so take care. I personally save the salt and oats for a body scrub, and they are particularly great for your foot scrubs!

I like this pack size as I also eat oatmeal! Plus the packaging appears more environmentally friendly as it is cardboard as opposed to plastic.

Exfoliation & Blackhead Removal

Blackheads are an unsightly occurrence on anyone's skin. Regular exfoliating is really beneficial if you suffer from blackheads.

OVERDONE THE FAKE TAN?

  • This is a handy little piece of information if you ever find yourself in the awkward position of needing to remove excess fake tan from your skin.

  • It is easy to get fake tan wrong. Many of the newer products are much better than in the past, but you can still end up with orange knees if you are not careful!

  • You should see a great improvement as the lime juice is particularly good at removing stains (which is effectively what fake tan is), and the turmeric helps to exfoliate.

  • In general, any exfoliating should help remove the excess fake tan problem, but if you have these ingredients on hand them give them a try.

    WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Turmeric powder
  • Lime juice

    WHAT TO DO:

  • Mix the turmeric powder with the lime juice until you get a soft paste.
  • Apply the paste to the area you want to remove the fake tan from.
  • Gently rub, then rinse off with warm water.

    For Sensitive Skin

Just because you have sensitive skin does not mean you can't get rid of the dead skin cells by exfoliating!

It's true, there are some harsh methods around, but there are also gentle methods that you are able to use to keep your skin looking perfect.
