Liver Spots / Age Spots

Home Remedies

Liver spots often come with other names, including age spots and dark spots on skin, and they have quite a few home remedies.

While stores may sell chemical skin lighteners, some people have bad reactions to these. They can leave you with an uneven appearance, peeling skin and sometimes even acne and scarring. In fact many of the skin bleaching creams are bad for your skin and they can also be harmful to your health.

Hydroquinone Caution

HYDROQUINONE
Hydroquinone is one of the main ingredients in many skin bleaching products. It has been banned in many countries including Japan and England.

Dr. Jacobs from the F.D.A. has concluded - after various tests (that have gone on since the late 80’s) - that Hydroquinone is mutagenic, clastogenic and immunotoxic, it caused various forms of cancer in the rats they tested it on. It has been deemed unsafe for the general public to use. However it is still in many bleaching products.

Natural Treatments for Age Spots

So what natural things are there that work to lighten those dark liver spots on your skin?

  • LEMON JUICE
Citrus juices are one of the best when it comes to lightening dark spots on skin.

When I was younger to get natural highlights in my hair I would put lemon juice in my hair and sit in the sun.

However, on your skin you want to stay out of the sun for at least 20 minutes after you apply it because it can cause you to burn.

    WHAT TO DO:

  • Apply with a cotton swab to the areas of dark spots on face or in general dark spots on skin, that you desire to lighten, let it sit for 10-15 minutes and rinse with warm water.

  • BUTTERMILK
Buttermilk contains lactic acid, which helps to peel dead layers of skin away and create a nice even skin tone where your liver spots are.

    WHAT TO DO:

  • For your Buttermilk Soak - Apply with a cotton ball/cotton swab, leave on for five minutes and rinse off with warm water.

  • THE COCKTAIL
This is a brown spot cocktail that is made from simple ingredients that are readily available from the kitchen.

    WHAT YOU NEED:

  • 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of Orange Juice
  • 1 teaspoon of Lime Juice.

    WHAT TO DO:

  • You can take this internally to help clear toxins out and leave you with nice glowing skin
    OR
  • You can apply it topically in which the acids will help to even out the skin tone naturally.

  • YOGURT AND HONEY
Much like buttermilk, yogurt also has acid that helps to even out and lighten the skin tone.

Honey has a ton of nutrients which promotes cell regeneration and to top it off it tightens and tones the skin leaving you with an all over wonderful home remedy for dark spots on face.

    WHAT TO DO:

  • Mix ½ cup honey with ½ cup yogurt and apply to the spots, leave on for five minutes and rinse off with warm water.

  • ALOE VERA
Known as a healing plant, it helps the skin to soften and evens out skin tone.

    WHAT TO DO:

  • The best way to use this is to break the aloe vera plant and just rub directly on the skin.
  • If you don’t have fresh aloe vera you can just use aloe vera juice and a cotton swab. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water.

  • GOTU-KOLA
One of the most effective and fastest ways to reduce age spots naturally is by using a product called Gotu-Kola, a Chinese herb that has been used for centuries to treat different ailments.

    WHAT TO DO:

  • The best way to use this is to mix 1/8 teaspoon of Gotu-Kola and 1/8 teaspoon of ginseng with an herbal tea and apply to your skin.
  • Let it sit for 10-15 minutes then rinse off.
  • Or you can drink the mixture (be careful if you’re prone to migraines, as ginseng is not your friend), this will help clean your system of unwanted toxins.

  • Special Note: I use Amazon online to purchase ready to go products so I can maintain my natural skin care regime at all times, e.g travelling, working long hours, unable to get to the store... It is a good alternative without compromising my ideals.
