We have had a busy few weeks, with the holiday and recovering from long weekends! It was great to just relax for an extra day. I had many questions asked of me about age spots over the past few weeks, so I thought it would be a great topic for this issue of PUREfect Your Skin Newsletter.
Age spots are flat black, brown or grey spots which appear after many years of sun exposure. Most people don’t understand what causes them and end up using a ton of harsh chemical treatments or skin whitening products to get rid of them. Don’t do it!! It’s bad for your skin and your health to use these anti-age spot creams and serums. Many of these creams use chemical bleaching agents in order to whiten the skin. So if you think it’s safe to use bleach on your hands, face, or any skin in general, go ahead and take some Clorox and use that! Otherwise keep reading.
What are age spots anyways? Well, when you are exposed to the sun, your body produces what is called melanin. Melanin is what creates the nice golden tan that so many people desire, but its main purpose is to protect the body from being baked by the UV rays. Sometimes though, the melanin will form in clusters under the layers of skin where it is most exposed. Over time, as dead skin layers are sloughed off the clusters appear, creating age spots.
There are a few things you can do, first off, if you don’t have them yet, protect your skin using an organic or all-natural sunscreen containing zinc oxide. Zinc oxide acts as tiny reflectors to keep the sun off of your skin, without clogging your pores. Surprisingly this is also a main ingredient in many diaper rash creams. But you want to be careful! Don’t use anything containing mineral oil – a prime example is baby oil. This clogs your pores and traps toxins and harsh chemicals in your skin.
Okay, now to move on to helping get rid of ones that are already there (and prevent new ones from forming).
Exfoliate! This is so important for any kind of skin care routine. You want to do it at least twice weekly, and up to 3-4 times weekly for more severe cases. This helps to get rid of all of the dead skin layers so that the pigment doesn’t have a chance to form in multiple layers. It helps to even out the skin and create a nice glowing effect as well.
There are a few simple ways to do exfoliation
1.) A whole milk mask – this “mask” can be used anywhere on the body and all you need is Whole Milk and some cotton balls. The whole milk is necessary for the fat content, it helps draw the gunk out of your skin and the lactic acid peels the dead skin away creating a nice smooth look.
Dip the cotton balls in the milk, dap on your skin and let it sit for 5-10 minutes then rinse off.
Side Note: Whole Milk can be replaced with Buttermilk if you so desire.
2.) Dead Sea Mud – is a great thing to use for exfoliation, it’s a simple two step process – apply to the skin, let sit for 20 minutes, and rinse off. That’s it! It tightens your pores, tones the skin, draws toxins out and gets rid of the dead skin cells.
The next thing you want to do is moisturize! Exfoliating can leave your skin dry, so moisturizing is essential to keep everything hydrated, elastic and glowing. The best kind of moisturizer to use is Raw Shea butter, or a body butter containing Raw Shea Butter. It naturally evens out skin tone as it rehydrates your skin. Be careful though, if you have never used it before and have an allergy to nuts, it is a good idea to just try a small portion to see how your skin reacts, as Shea is a nut.
If you do have an allergy to nuts and cannot use Shea Butter, the next best thing is Raw Cocoa Butter mixed with Olive Oil.
Once you have done those two basics for a few weeks you should start to notice a difference, if you don’t see significant results or ones that you are happy with there are a few other options you can try.
1.) Lemon, this fruit is useful for so many things, and reducing the appearance of age spots is one of those things. It acts as a natural skin lightener, and is completely safe! All you do is slice a lemon in half, and rub on the areas you want lightened twice a week, for 8 weeks. I know 8 weeks seems like a long time, but in the long run it really isn’t! In 2 months you could have soft supple youthful skin again!
But please do not do this right before you go outside! Lemon juice naturally attracts sunlight, so wait at least 20 minutes before going in the sun if you are using this.
2.) Using a Chinese herb called Gotu Kola – known as the herb of life, as ancient stories say that it has been known to cure many things. (for a full list of benefits visit; http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/gotu-kola-000253.htm)
How to use; Mix 1/8 teaspoon of Gotu Kola in your favorite herbal tea or in warm water, with a tiny bit of cayenne pepper and 1/8 teaspoon ginseng and apply twice daily – within a few days your skin should show significant results. Visit
By implementing these techniques, you’ll have healthy younger looking skin in no time!

"I am getting blemishes due to pregnancy hormones, is there something safe and effective that I can use to help my skin?" - Holly S.
Yes! Firstly, since it is due to a significant hormone change, you have to keep in mind that you may not be able to prevent all breakouts or blemishes. However, there are definitely things you can do to help.
1.) Exfoliate your skin with a gentle exfoliant such as a whole milk mask - all you need is whole milk and some cotton balls. Dip the cotton balls in the milk and apply to your face. After 5-10 minutes rinse off. This clears off all of the dead skin and helps to make the skin soft and smooth and get rid of extra oils.
2.) Use a good moisturizer, your body is producing too much oil, if you provide it with the oils it needs then it wont feel the need to keep producing these oils.
You can use a light oil such as; Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Emu Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, or Jojoba Oil. Or a body butter such as cocoa or shea.
3.) Make sure you are eating plenty of fruits and veggies! These help to keep the hormones a little more in check and help with your skin looking radiant!
